Self-Worth During Grief
A positive self-image is vital in creating a successful life. Thinking positively about yourself and your life creates positive experiences. Many times bereaved children find it quite difficult to think positive thoughts. This, however, can be a time for them to discover some new, positive qualities about themselves.
In the activity below, children have the opportunity to identify grieving thoughts that create a "dragged-down" feeling. Using the idea of what their deceased loved one really liked about them, helps them in two ways:
1. Children recognize the power of how their thoughts create their experience.
2. Children recognize some of their positive qualities, as remembered from their relationship to their deceased loved one.
Supporting children to think more about their loving qualities will strengthen their sense of self-worth. A strong sense of self-worth is a PLUS, when dealing with grief !
