CAMP CAROLINE

Thanks to a collaboration between Friends of Caroline Hospice and Kids' Grief Relief members of the Hospice Student Bereavement Team, Camp Caroline was born. This was designed as a one day grief support camp where students could attend for free, thanks to a private gift and grants by several organizations noted at the bottom.

Camp was held on beautiful Fripp Island at their Community Centre,

with excursions to a local park on the island, and a concluding ceremony on the beach with students and their parents.

Twenty-five students signed up for this one day event. Members of Kids' Grief Relief worked with Hospice Staff to create an outline for a full day's worth of Activities.

The event consisted of Friends of Caroline Hospice Staff,

Camp Director Steve Scudder
Assistant Director Cristin Casper
Nurse Denise Drake

and the following volunteers:

Facilitators from the Hospice Student Bereavement Team - including members from Kids' Grief Relief

Student Camp Assistants from Beaufort Academy

Lunch servers from the Fripp Island Women's Club

Photographers John Mattson and Rebecca Bass

Nature Activities Coordinator Janie Lackman

Yoga Instructor Brittney Hiller

In addition, the Beaufort Baptist Church donated two buses with volunteer drivers to transport the students from Beaufort to Fripp, and to the Fripp beach and back.

It was teamwork at its best !

Everyone - Students and Volunteers alike - wore Camp Caroline
T-Shirts throughout the day, which made us look like one awesome team.

The students were separated into 4 different age groups, and went through five sessions with facilitators. They had the opportunity to share with their fellow students their experience of grief, while the facilitators gently helped them navigate through their feelings and reactions to the loss of a loved one. The students also had the opportunity to have some fun amidst their grief.

It was wonderful to see everyone feeling loved and supported as the day progressed from session to session.

Parents arrived later in the day, and were reunited with their children. The day concluded with a special ceremony at the beach, followed by the receipt of special gifts.

Camp Caroline was a sucess on many levels - so thanks to all who made it happen !

What a wonderful way a community can come together to help grieving students !
